Competition invites engineers to build predictive solutions that reduce waste and extend the life of systems
PHOENIX – Hackster.io, an Avnet community, in collaboration with Nordic Semiconductor, has launched a new global competition challenging engineers, developers and makers to build predictive monitoring solutions that help equipment, infrastructure and natural resources last longer through early detection and predictive maintenance.
The Sustain the System competition invites participants to build intelligent monitoring systems using Nordic Semiconductor's nRF54LM20 Development Kit and Bluetooth® technology that can detect degradation, predict failures and help reduce waste by extending the life of critical systems.
The challenge focuses on practical applications across equipment, infrastructure and natural resource management. Potential projects include greenhouse monitoring, community infrastructure monitoring, water resource management and wildlife health monitoring.

"This competition challenges our community to apply edge AI and Bluetooth technology to real-world sustainability challenges while creating solutions that can deliver measurable environmental and operational benefits."
Using Nordic's nRF54LM20 DK, participants will develop solutions that collect and analyze real-world data, monitor changing conditions, detect potential failures and provide actionable insights. The platform's edge AI capabilities enable machine learning applications that can identify patterns and anomalies directly on the device, helping organizations respond before problems escalate.
Projects will be evaluated on innovation, technical implementation and real-world impact, with prizes awarded across six categories, including Best Overall Solution, Best Edge AI Implementation, Best Use of Bluetooth and more.
