ABOUT THE AVNET TECH GAMES:
Avnet, Inc., the largest publicly-held company headquartered in Phoenix,
Ariz. and a leading global technology distributor, has teamed with
Arizona educators and leading technology companies to help college
students acquire valuable skills needed to thrive in the modern
workplace. At the Avnet Tech Games, students compete to gain hands-on,
practical experience in addition to the academic instruction they
receive in the classroom. The competitive events feature
multidisciplinary technology scenarios that require students to test
their knowledge, creativity, decision-making, problem-solving and
technical skills.
The 2016 Avnet Tech Games include the following challenges:
-
Cisco
Network Expert Security Battle - Teams will be tested on their
understanding of intercloud and networking security and will work to
secure their network and prepare for a competition practice attack.
-
Desktop
Domination - In a timed competition, students will use their
knowledge to complete a set of tasks and troubleshoot issues in the
Windows operating system.
-
HP
Fastest IoT Computer Build - Competitors race to build and
troubleshoot a PC, working together to deliver the fastest times
without errors.
-
IoT
Sensor Fusion Challenge - In this challenge, teams will design and
demonstrate a solution using software and gateway with component
hardware to achieve a specific set of criteria revealed at the
starting time.
-
Java
Blitz - This event will provide students with the opportunity to
develop Java code that will be judged based on a predefined set of
criteria.
-
Robot
Race Obstacle Course - Each team will have five hours to build and
program a robot that will complete a maze obstacle course.
-
Social
Media Mania - Using Amazon Web Services (AWS) toolsets, social
media data about Spring Break will be collected and analyzed. The
teams will collate the collected data, visualize the data and present
a marketing plan/selling strategy for Spring Break 2017 to a panel of
judges.
-
Solar
Scrimmage - In a competition that addresses one of today’s most
important environmental issues, students will be challenged to design,
build, test and present the best overall solar-powered “green energy”
water pumping system.
-
WWT/Palo
Alto Server Search - Students will be challenged to hack into a
server to collect data.
Each winning student of the Avnet Tech Games will receive a $1,000
scholarship. Faculty members will collect $200 for leading participating
teams and an additional $300 for each winning team. Winners will also be
invited to tour Avnet’s 220,000 square foot integration center and hear
from Avnet CIO Steve Phillips and other executives on careers in
technology.
Participating students will also have the opportunity to network with
event sponsors and executives from companies such as Cisco, DP Air, HP
Enterprise, CDW, NXP, NetApp, Molex, TDK-Lamda, Logicalis, Microchip,
Palo/Alto and World Wide Technology.
