PHOENIX--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 22, 2004--

Value-Added Distributor Plans Migration to Meet New Quality Standard at Other Americas-Based Facilities

Avnet Electronics Marketing Americas, an operating group of Avnet Inc. (NYSE:AVT), announced it was awarded today with formal registration to ISO/TS 16949 by Quality Management Institute (QMI), an internationally recognized, independent third-party, quality system registrar. Avnet's Milpitas, Calif., programming center completed all requirements for the new automotive ISO/TS-16949 quality standard and passed the registration audit this past December.

"Avnet is proud of its Milpitas-based employees who have worked closely as a team in moving from the ISO-9001 standard to the new TS standard to ensure that we meet the stringent quality demands of the automotive industry," said Jim Mooney, Avnet's director of device programming services.

As a value-added distributor of electronic components for customers throughout the electronics industry supply chain, one of Avnet Electronics Marketing's key automotive industry-related services is to provide programming of integrated circuits used by subcontractors who build electronic assemblies for the automotive industry. Avnet has the capacity across its five Americas-based programming centers to program more than 75 million custom devices a year and the resources to support all state-of-the-art programming technologies.

"Avnet has strategically identified our Milpitas facility as our flagship automotive programming center and will use it as a benchmark as we implement plans for ISO/TS-16949 registration at other programming centers in the Americas, including the Guadalajara, Mexico, center, which is targeted for TS registration in September of 2004," said Mooney.

"Avnet intends to support our customers in the automotive industry by moving to the TS quality standard in each of our programming centers," Mooney added. "Avnet operates three other Americas-based programming centers in Chandler, Ariz.; Lexington, Ky; and Peabody, Mass., each electronically linked to provide for immediate load shifting between facilities."

Avnet's quality management system is ISO 9001-2000 registered throughout the Americas, Asia and Europe. Its programming facility in Lyon, France, is currently ISO/TS-16949 registered and its Poing, Germany, programming facility is QS9000 registered, with a migration underway to the new ISO/TS-16949 standard.
