PHOENIX--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 11, 2004--Avnet Electronics Marketing announces a new evaluation kit featuring an integrated platform to develop and test designs featuring the highly advanced Freescale Semiconductor MPC885 PowerQUICC(TM) Integrated Communications Processor. The kit features 10/100 Ethernet, USB and RS-232 console interfaces to transport processed data via an AvBus parallel interface from a host system. A complete software development suite including a Linux board support package is included with the kit for maximum design flexibility. The kit also includes a complete bill of materials and schematics.

"Avnet Electronics Marketing is committed to delivering tools that enable our suppliers to bring new technology to our customers more efficiently," explained Jim Schaeffer, senior VP of Avnet Design Services. "This Avnet kit was developed to simplify and shorten the often complicated communication design process and provide the necessary hardware and software to give developers a quick start in their next design."

"The reference kit developed by Avnet is a valuable tool for our mutual customers to test drive Freescale's MPC885 processor in a variety of communications applications," continued Mike Shoemake, PowerQUICC marketing manager at Freescale Semiconductor. "We are pleased to work with Avnet to bring this flexible and integrated suite to this market segment."

The MPC885 PowerQUICC processor offers an integrated security engine, dual Fast Ethernet interfaces, and USB support (full/low-speed) in a low-cost communications processor architecture. The family supports core frequencies scaling from 66 MHz to 133 MHz and external bus speeds of up to 80 MHz. Like all PowerQUICC processors, the MPC885 family devices integrate two processing blocks: an embedded 8xx PowerPC core (with an 8 KB instruction cache and an 8 KB data cache) and an on-chip Communications Processor Module (CPM).

The MPC885 excels in communication, networking and industrial control systems, demonstrating the enhanced benefits of a leading-edge network controller solution. A variety of memory technologies are implemented to allow full utilization of the MPC885 controller functions.
