Developers gain first-hand knowledge to create more efficient and resilient cities through technology

Impact Summit presented by hackster.io (An Avnet Community) will feature live hardware demos, workshops, and conversations with tech experts, policy makers, and global organizations discussing how technology solutions can contribute to more efficient and resilient cities around the world.

Technologists, community trailblazers and technology providers are invited to explore how technologies like machine learning, advanced data analytics, and IoT in the field can transform the way in which infrastructure, public services and essential facilities are maintained in urban environments. The summit will feature resilient city advocates such as Nordic Semiconductor which specializes in designing ultra-low-power wireless communication technology that powers the Internet of Things (IoT), Fab City Foundation which challenges cities across the globe to reimagine sustainable development, and Hackster Community Members who are making and creating solutions for wherever they call home.

 

Highlights of Day 1: Nov. 14

Keynote: Kate Kallot, CEO of Amini and one of TIME's 100 Most Influential People in AI, will discuss harmony between socioeconomic development and environmental protection and how technological innovation, ecological economics, and lifestyle changes support the creation of societies that are both economically dynamic and ecologically sustainable.

Community Spotlight: Hackster Community Members will share their projects focused on solutions that are making cities around the globe more resilient, safer, cleaner, and more efficient.

Keynote: Tomas Diez, Executive Director of Fab City Foundation, will share working practices and knowledge of Fab City Global Initiative. Fab City is an innovative urban model that empowers communities to build their own sustainable, self-sufficient, innovative, and regenerative futures with technology and meaningful design.

  • Sustainable Cities Using Smart Efficient AI – with Todd Vierra, Vice President Customer Engagement, BrainChip
  • An Introduction to Embedded Programming – with Michael Hall, Principle Developer Evangelist, Arm

Demos:

  • Open City: Urban Digital Twins to Support Public Interaction and Mobility Research at Scale – Wendy Ju, Associate Professor, Cornell Tech
  • Smarter Cities: Why We Need Frugal Innovation For Urban Development – Kevin Schmidt, Specialist-Urban Innovation, Technologies, and Digitalization, United Nations Developer Program

Panel: Technology Resiliency in Urban Environments – An open conversation on building technology resiliency in developing urban environments – whether helping a growing city become more resilient through technology or the knowledge and resources for technology longevity in developing nations.

Community Spotlight: Hackster Community Members will share their projects focused on solutions that are making cities around the globe more resilient, safer, cleaner and more efficient.

Hackster Café: AI and Telecommunications – Join Hackster’s Alex Glow as she chats with Thomas Basikolo, Program Officer of International Telecommunication Union about his work managing AI for Good Activities at ITU, including recurring challenges such as the TinyML Challenge, The AI/ML in 5G challenge, and the GeoAI Challenge
