At Avnet, nothing excites us more than being able to leverage our ecosystem to build a more sustainable world. This Earth Day, Avnet renews our commitment to ensuring our operations help protect the environment for our employees, customers, partners and communities. We are proud of the progress we have made internally and externally while continuing to support the development of products and technologies to create a more prosperous and resilient future for us all.

Avnet continues to support the Arizona State University Innovation Open, which has exhibited innovative technology that takes on some of the world’s greatest issues. This year’s winner, Strella Biotech, created a game changing technology aimed at one of the world's most critical issues—food scarcity. More than 1/3 of fresh produce never reaches the consumer due to lack of proper quality assurance in the supply chain, but Strella Biotech takes on this great challenge by utilizing biosensors to predict the maturity of fruits, thereby reducing food loss throughout the supply chain.

In partnership with IBM and Southwestern Energy, we’ve harnessed the great potential of IoT technology to monitor large areas and detect system leaks of harmful greenhouse gas pollutants. Through early detection and prompt action, this partnership will help mitigate natural gas leaks which are one of the greatest ozone pollutants.

Through our partnership with LA Cleantech Incubator, Avnet has also been working closely with a number of startups seeking out more sustainable alternatives to many contemporary technologies. Ampaire, for instance, is in the process of developing a zero-emission aircraft, and SAYA has developed an IoT-based water management system capable of detecting and preventing water leaks and burst pipes.

Avnet continues to improve its energy and emissions management strategies throughout its operations. Our largest distribution centers meet ISO 14001 standards, our new facilities are LEED certified, and we have transformed our reporting practices to a bottom-up approach, ensuring the most accurate data. These practices have led to an operational energy intensity decrease from fiscal year 2017 to 2018. You can find details about these and other improvements in our released Emissions Report.

All of this and more have contributed to our outstanding reputation as an industry leader in sustainability, and have even earned us a spot on Barron’s 100 Most Sustainable Companies in 2019. Our dedication to protecting our environment today to ensure a thriving tomorrow for future generations is a top priority for us at Avnet.
